Volunteers and Placement Students

We have been delighted to have the support of volunteers to assist us in our work. This year we are very fortunate to have six placement students from BIMM and the University of Brighton. This enriches the experience for students and allows us to support volunteers who may be looking for a career in education. It has also been valuable to get support from experienced teachers who have welcomed a different approach to learning.

We have been especially pleased to continue our collaboration with the University of Brighton and provide placements for their education students. The University of Brighton students are all on the BA Education Degree course and are undertaking research projects. We benefit by having other people available to our students and the University students benefit by seeing a fully functioning educational approach that avoids the errors of schooling.

For the third year we have linked with Brighton Institute of Modern Music (BIMM) and have hosted their graduates who were doing a Post Graduate teaching qualification. This has proved a valuable addition to our music tuition as they are able to offer us real expertise on a range of instruments. Paolo, who is now in his second year of volunteering with us is a mature student from BIMM. As well as his interest in music he has also has been involved in some fascinating discussions around science and philosophy.

One of our tutors, Gillian, is on the Board for the BA Education Degree as a placement host representative, whilst Ian Cunningham was recently invited to run a workshop on the course on the subject of ‘Employability'.

We invite anyone who is interested in volunteering with us to get in touch. ian@smlcollege.org.uk
