Why Join Our Summer Programme?
Young people rarely get the opportunity to step back and think about their learning journey and future aspirations. School often focuses on the curriculum, without encouraging young people to reflect on why they are studying certain subjects, which GCSEs to choose, and what learning approaches work best for them.
At SML College, we provide a unique and engaging environment where young people can explore their passions, develop essential life skills, and leave feeling empowered with a plan for their education and future.
For over 40 years, the techniques we use have been successfully implemented by major global businesses such as Nike and Sainsbury’s to develop leadership and independent thinking skills.
Now, for the first time, we are offering this proven approach to young people outside of SML College. Having successfully used this method for over 20 years within our college, we are now making it accessible to young people in mainstream education who want to take control of their learning journey.
What to Expect?
This is not your typical summer club! Throughout the week, you will:
- Work in small Learning Groups to develop Learning Agreements – a tool for self-managed learning.
- Take part in Community Meetings to collaboratively shape the week’s activities.
- Engage in interactive workshops, guest talks, and hands-on projects tailored to your interests.
- Enjoy plenty of free-flow time to explore personal projects, try new skills, or simply socialise in a supportive environment.
- Participate in an end-of-week Expo, where you can share your creations and achievements with others.
Key Features of the Programme
Community Meetings
We start and end each day with a group meeting where everyone (young people and Learning Advisors) come together to discuss plans, share insights, and ensure everyone is getting the most out of their experience. Young people are encouraged to lead these discussions if they wish.
Learning Groups & Learning Agreements
Each young person joins a small Learning Group with a dedicated Learning Advisor. They will develop a Learning Agreement, reflecting on their past, present, and future learning goals.
Special Workshops & Guest Speakers
Throughout the week, young people can attend interactive workshops and talks from inspiring professionals, including:
- Career & Skills Development: CV writing, starting a business, effective presentations
- Creative & Practical Skills: Woodwork, arts, music, drama, cooking
- Technology & Critical Thinking: Understanding AI, human biases, website creation
- Sports & Wellbeing: Football, badminton, table tennis, contemporary dance
Free Flow Time
A time for young people to explore their interests. Whether it’s working on personal projects, engaging in sports, learning new skills, or simply socialising, this time is designed for self-directed exploration.
End-of-Week Expo
To celebrate their achievements, young people can showcase their projects, skills, or learnings in an informal Expo on the last day. Families are welcome to attend!
